If you’re here you probably know that Rhinebeck, New York, is a quaint village nestled in Dutchess County and the heart of the Hudson Valley.  But you may not know that during the spring season, it truly comes alive! With charming streets, vibrant cultural scene, and natural beauty, Rhinebeck offers visitors a wide range of activities to enjoy. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a foodie, a car aficionado, or someone who appreciates art and music, there's something for everyone. Here’s a guide to some of our team’s favorite things to do in Rhinebeck in the spring.

Hike at Ferncliff Forest: A Hidden Gem with Scenic Views

There’s never a bad time for this one!  If you're a nature lover, one of the must-do activities in Rhinebeck is a hike at Ferncliff Forest. This 200-acre preserve is located just outside of town and offers beautiful trails, lush woods, and breathtaking views of the surrounding Hudson Valley. It’s the perfect place to get outdoors and enjoy the crisp spring air.  The property is meticulously maintained, leashed dogs are allowed.

Our kids favorite feature of Ferncliff Forest is the fire tower. Standing at over 1,000 feet above sea level, you can get your steps in and enjoy the sweeping panoramic views of the region, including the Catskill Mountains to the west and the Shawangunk Ridge to the south. The hike to the fire tower is relatively short, making it accessible for hikers of all levels, but the steps up mean that you definitely want some sturdy footwear.  Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas and a great photo opportunity.

Classic Car Show and Swap Meet at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds

For car enthusiasts, the Classic Car Show and Swap Meet at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds is a highlight of the spring season. Happening May 2 - 4th this year.  This event draws collectors and car lovers from all over the region. The fairgrounds are transformed into a massive showcase of classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Visitors can admire everything from vintage muscle cars to rare, collectible vehicles, and even purchase parts or memorabilia at the swap meet.  You may even get to see our own Marc there showing his prized Camero!

The event typically lasts for the weekend, with various activities, vendors, and attractions throughout. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy a family-friendly day, browse through classic cars, and maybe even find a rare automotive treasure. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth at Samuel’s Candy Shop

No visit to Rhinebeck is complete without stopping by the iconic Samuel's Sweet Shop, a celebrity-owned establishment that’s been serving delicious treats for over 30 years. This charming shop, located in the heart of Rhinebeck, is a local institution known for its handmade chocolates, nostalgic candy selections, and friendly atmosphere.

In the spring, Samuel’s is particularly popular for its fresh batches of Easter-themed chocolates, fudge, and other seasonal confections. Whether you’re craving a chocolate bunny or a box of assorted truffles, Samuel’s has something for everyone. Don’t forget to try their famous caramel-covered apples — a Rhinebeck specialty!

Dining Outdoors: Terrapin and Mimi's

Spring in Rhinebeck means the return of outdoor dining! One of our local favorite restaurants offering a beautiful alfresco experience is Terrapin.

  • Terrapin is an award-winning restaurant that offers a farm-to-table dining experience with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Their outdoor seating area is a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal while soaking in the picturesque views of Rhinebeck. During the spring months, the restaurant serves up everything from gourmet pizzas to fresh salads and local seafood. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a craft cocktail or a glass of wine from their extensive selection.

Experience Live Music at the Fisher Center at Bard

For those seeking a cultural experience in Rhinebeck, look no further than the Fisher Center at Bard College. This state-of-the-art performance venue hosts a wide variety of concerts and performances throughout the year, and spring is no exception. From classical music to contemporary performances, the Fisher Center offers something for every type of music lover.

You can catch a variety of exciting performances, including classical concerts from the Bard College Conservatory of Music and eclectic shows featuring everything from jazz to world music. The Fisher Center is also home to the renowned Bard SummerScape Festival, which includes an impressive lineup of opera, theater, and dance performances. While the summer festival is the highlight, spring is a great time to experience smaller-scale concerts and events in the intimate LUMA Theater or Sosnoff Theater.

Visit the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

For families visiting Rhinebeck, the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is an exciting and educational destination. This historic airfield and museum is home to a remarkable collection of vintage aircraft, some of which are still flown during thrilling airshows throughout the spring and summer months. The aerodrome offers a fascinating look at the history of aviation, with interactive exhibits that will captivate both kids and adults. Our kids absolutely loved the story they tell with the old-time planes soaring through the sky during flying demonstrations, and they’ll have the opportunity to learn about aviation’s early pioneers. It’s a great family outing that combines history, education, and excitement.

Slow Fox Farm Brewery: A Relaxed Spot for Families

After a day of exploring Rhinebeck, head over to Slow Fox Farm Brewery for a relaxed, family-friendly experience. This charming brewery offers a spacious outdoor seating area perfect for families. While the adults can sample craft beers made from locally sourced ingredients, children can enjoy the open space to play and explore. The brewery often features games and activities in their outdoor area, making it a fun, laid-back spot for families to unwind. The welcoming atmosphere ensures that everyone — from kids to adults — has a great time.

Spring Festivals and Events

In addition to the classic car show, Rhinebeck hosts several other exciting events during the spring. Whether you're interested in artisanal craft fairs, food festivals, or historical tours, there’s always something happening in this charming town. Some events to look out for include:

  • Rhinebeck Farmers Market: Open every Sunday from April through November, the market offers fresh, local produce, artisanal goods, and homemade baked goods. It’s the perfect place to sample the flavors of the region.
